About the IGES format
IGES is the oldest CAD exchange format (ANSI, 1980), still common with industrial machines and suppliers. It's mostly used for exchange with older CAD/CAM software, tooling, CNC machining and supplier drawings, and it stores exact surfaces and curves (planes, NURBS, trimmed surfaces), without STEP's solid structure.
How to open a IGES file
- 01
Drop the file
Drag your IGES file onto this page or tap to pick it. It opens in your browser: it is never uploaded to a server.
- 02
Look around the model
Rotate with the mouse or a finger, zoom with the wheel or a pinch, and double-click the model to center the view on that point.
- 03
Measure in millimeters
Click two points on the model to see the real distance between them. The whole model's dimensions show in the panel.
- 04
Convert it if you need to
If you need the model in another format, the converter turns your IGES into STL, OBJ, GLB and more, also inside your browser.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between IGES and STEP?
Both store exact geometry, but IGES usually carries loose surfaces instead of closed solids, while STEP adds solids, assemblies and colors far more reliably. If you can choose, export STEP; IGES is for software or machines that read nothing else.
Why does an IGES converted to STL have open edges?
Because each surface of an IGES is triangulated on its own: the triangles of two neighboring faces meet at the edge but are not joined. For printing, run the STL through Repair mesh, which welds vertices by position and closes small holes.
Is my CAD file uploaded to a server?
No. OpenCascade runs in your browser as WebAssembly and the file never leaves your computer. The first time, about 7 MB of the engine download, and then they stay cached.
