Frequently asked questions

How long does a keychain take to print?

A typical name keychain — 60 to 80 mm long and 4 to 5 mm thick — takes between 15 and 30 minutes on an FDM printer at 0.2 mm layers. It is one of the fastest things you can print, which is why it works so well in batches: six or eight of them fit at once on a 220×220 mm bed, so a little over an hour leaves you a dozen finished. The ilove3d keychain generator produces the STL in your browser, with no server queue and no wait, so you can run through a whole list of names one after another and send them to the slicer together. If you are printing many, raise the layer height on the base plate and keep 0.2 mm on the raised text: the name is the only place where it shows.

Will the ring survive daily use?

Yes. The ring is generated as part of the plate rather than glued on afterwards: the ilove3d keychain generator builds it as an annulus belonging to the same solid, with 2 to 3 mm of material around the hole. That matters because the weak point of a printed keychain is always the junction between ring and body, and when that junction is a seam between two separate pieces it eventually gives way. PLA handles daily use without trouble; if the keychain is going to live in a pocket with metal keys, PETG adds abrasion resistance and resistance to heat deformation, which is what ruins a PLA part left in a car in the sun. Printing it lying flat puts the layers perpendicular to the pull, which is the correct orientation. One design note: with a 0.4 mm nozzle, a hole under 4 mm across comes out with ragged walls, so it is worth not going below that even if a thinner ring looks better on screen.

How do I make the text a different color than the plate?

With a filament pause, the standard technique for flat two-colour parts, and it needs no multi-material printer. In your slicer you schedule a colour change at exactly the height where the base plate ends and the raised name begins: the printer stops there, you swap the spool by hand, and it carries on. The result is a plate in one colour with the name in another, cleanly defined, because the cut lands on a real layer boundary. The ilove3d keychain generator shows the plate thickness and the relief thickness separately precisely so you know where to place the pause. Choose thicknesses that are multiples of your layer height — 0.2 mm — so the change falls exactly on a boundary rather than halfway through a layer. If you are unsure where the boundary falls, the slicer's layer preview shows it: scrub to the layer where the text starts and read the height off the ruler.

Can I sell the keychains I generate?

Yes. The STL that ilove3d generates is yours and carries no licence or attribution obligation: the file is produced in your browser from the text you typed and never passes through our servers. The nine bundled typefaces have free licences that permit commercial use of the printed object, so you can sell the keychains at a market, to order, or in an online shop without asking anyone. The one thing that does not transfer is the typeface as a file: you may sell the printed keychain and its STL, but not redistribute the font on its own. And if you are printing someone else's name — a brand, a club, a character — the limit there is trademark rather than typography, and that is on you. None of this requires telling us or licensing anything: the site keeps no record of what gets generated, because it never sees it in the first place.
