About the DAE format
DAE is Collada, the open XML 3D interchange format driven by Khronos. It's mostly used for interchange between legacy tools, SketchUp, older engines, digital museum archives, and it stores geometry, scene, materials, referenced textures and animations in XML.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my SketchUp DAE show no textures?
The DAE references textures as external image files that don't travel inside the .dae. The geometry converts perfectly; to keep textures in a single file, the natural destination is GLB (exported from the source tool).
Is Collada still relevant?
It was the interchange standard of the 2000s and was displaced by GLTF, its spiritual successor (both from Khronos). It survives in historical archives, SketchUp and older pipelines — which is why converting it to modern formats is so common.
Can I print a DAE?
Convert it to STL here and it goes straight into the slicer. As a scene format, the usual caveat applies: materials and hierarchy are lost in STL — only the shape remains, which is what the printer needs.
