What this tool does

From text in nine typefaces, an image (by threshold, cutting out the dark or the light parts) or an SVG.

Automatic bridges for the islands, the middle of an O, an A or the eyes of a face: width, count per island and direction (shortest, vertical or horizontal). Each bridge crosses only the cut next to it, without blocking another letter.

Rectangle, rounded, round or outline sheet, with margin, thickness and a cut bevel so paint does not creep underneath.

Frequently asked questions

What are stencil bridges?

They are the thin strips that tie the islands to the rest of the stencil. An island is the part of the sheet left surrounded by the cut, like the middle of an O or an A: unheld, it would fall out and the letter would come out as a blob. ilove3d's stencil maker finds every island and gives it the bridges you choose, crossing only the cut around it; vertical ones give the classic stencil lettering look.

How thick should a printed stencil be?

For spray or roller paint, 1 mm of PLA or PETG with a frame around it stays rigid and cleans easily. For baking or coffee, 0.6 to 0.8 mm, so sugar or cocoa does not pile up at the edge. For airbrush or curved surfaces, 0.4 to 0.6 mm in TPU, which follows the shape. Always print it at 100% infill: with partial infill a thin sheet comes out full of gaps.

What is the cut bevel for?

It widens the cut upward by a few tenths of a millimeter. At the bottom, against the surface you paint, the edge stays sharp and sits flat; at the top it opens up, so paint goes in without piling against the wall and does not creep underneath. The tool builds it in layer-high steps, which is how the printer would lay it down anyway.

Can I cut the stencil with a plotter or a laser?

Yes. Besides the STL and 3MF, the tool downloads an SVG in millimeters with the whole stencil, bridges included, which Cricut Design Space, Silhouette Studio, LightBurn or Inkscape open to cut vinyl, cardboard, mylar or acrylic.
