What is lost converting USDZ to PLY?

USDZ stores a complete USD scene with geometry, PBR materials and textures in an uncompressed ZIP and PLY stores geometry, normals and per-vertex colors, so the conversion is not symmetric and it pays to know what stays behind. PLY stores geometry and vertex colors: materials and textures are lost. The geometry itself survives intact: every triangle and every coordinate passes through unchanged and in the same units, because the ilove3d converter copies the mesh without rescaling or recentring it. What can be lost is whatever the destination format has no way to represent, and that depends on the pair rather than on the tool. If you need to keep appearance as well as shape, check whether one of the other output formats covers the gap: GLB keeps materials and textures, PLY keeps per-vertex colour, and STL keeps neither of the two. The warning appears before you download, so nothing is a surprise when you open the file.

Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. Converting USDZ to PLY happens entirely in your browser: the file opens as a local blob, it is processed on your own machine, and the result downloads without anything leaving your computer. There is no upload, no intermediate server and no temporary storage for anyone to purge afterwards. Open your browser network panel while converting and you will not see a single outgoing request carrying your model. That matters when the file sits under a non-disclosure agreement, when it is your own unpublished design, or when it is a medical scan. It also has a practical consequence: there is no size limit imposed by a server, and the ceiling is your own machine memory instead. And once the page has loaded, the converter keeps working even with no connection at all. None of this depends on trusting us, either: it is verifiable from your own browser in a few seconds, which is a different kind of guarantee from a privacy policy.

Does converting change the size of the model?

No. Unlike a good share of online converters, the ilove3d converter does not rescale, recentre or rotate anything: the coordinates of your USDZ are copied straight across into the PLY. If your part measured 47.3 mm tall before converting, it measures exactly that afterwards, and it keeps its position relative to the origin, which is what matters when the model belongs to an assembly and has to line up with other pieces. Many converters normalise the mesh on load — centring it and scaling it to a standard size — because it previews neatly that way, and they hand you back a file with changed measurements without mentioning it. That does not happen here. The only tool on the site that moves or scales geometry is transform, and you have to ask it explicitly.

What programs open a PLY file?

PLY is a mesh or point-cloud format that can store per-vertex color, typical of 3D scanners, and it is normally used in 3D scanning, photogrammetry, mesh processing (MeshLab, CloudCompare). That is the main reason to convert into this format: getting the model into the program or the platform where you actually intend to use it. Before converting it is worth confirming that the destination accepts PLY, because not every program supports every format and the installed version often matters more than the name of the software. If the file is headed for a website or a browser viewer, GLB is usually the safest bet; if it goes to a slicer for printing, STL remains the standard that opens everywhere; and if it is bound for augmented reality on an iPhone, USDZ is the only one Quick Look recognises natively.
